How to Choose the Right 4K TV for Your Room

Start with the room, not the spec sheet

Screen size should be driven by viewing distance. As a rule of thumb, sit about 1.5 times the screen's diagonal away: a 55-inch panel suits a 2.1 m sofa distance, a 65-inch panel wants roughly 2.5 m. Measure before you shop — most upgrades people regret are TVs that turned out too small for the room.

Light matters too. A south-facing window opposite the TV turns every glossy panel into a mirror. If you cannot control ambient light, prioritise a bright panel with an anti-glare coating over the deepest blacks.

Panel type: OLED, QLED and LED explained

OLED pixels emit their own light, giving perfect blacks, wide viewing angles and slim designs — ideal for movie nights in a dim room. QLED and mini-LED TVs push higher peak brightness with quantum-dot colour, which is better for bright living rooms and sports.

For a mixed-use family TV, a mid-range QLED with local dimming is usually the sweet spot. Reserve OLED for dedicated media rooms or viewers who sit off to the side.

Refresh rate, gaming and motion

A true 120Hz panel keeps fast cricket broadcasts and football smooth; many budget sets advertise 'motion rates' that are software estimates of a 60Hz panel. If you or your kids game, look for native 120Hz, ALLM and a low-latency game mode — HDMI 2.1 is a bonus for 4K/120 from current consoles.

HDR, sound and smart features

HDR10 and HLG are the baseline; Dolby Vision adds scene-by-scene tuning on supported content. Check peak brightness (nits) rather than the HDR logo alone — HDR looks flat on dim panels.

Built-in speakers are acceptable for news and casual viewing, but anything cinematic benefits from a soundbar. Smart platforms (webOS, Tizen, Google TV) matter less than you think since an inexpensive streaming stick can upgrade any TV — but make sure the set has enough HDMI ports for your setup.
